Bluestone, Basalt, Melbourne, Victorian

Bluestone is a local name given to basalt. Basalt is the result of volcanic lava flows. The common colouring is grey to black. Bluestone has been used extensively in Victoria, especially in the city of Melbourne, since the early 1800's. The Melbourne City Council (MCC) has used Bluestone extensively throughout Melbourne's many lanes and alleyways.

Marble Art has available an incredible range of bluestone in thickness from 10mm to 100mm. Many types of Bluestone and Basalt are available.

We have several finishes available in Bluestone (Basalt).

  • Sawn and Milled is a non slip finish often used externally for paving. If the surface is sawn *and* milled, it removes the large saw blade marks from the surface finish, this is a more attractive finish.
  • Honed is a semi-polished finish for interior use and for the cladding of walls.
  • Etched is a non-slip finish for external use with the added character from sand-blasting.
  • Polished Finish is a high gloss finish suitable for interior use and for the cladding of walls.
  • Dreamtime is an exotic non-slip finish used for external paving or cladding walls, the texture is mottled from the application of flame.
  • Chiseled Basaltino Finish is in limited stock only and is a non-slip finish for external use.
  • Basaltino Sawn is in limited stock only and is a non-slip finish for external use.
