Bluestone is a local name given to basalt. Basalt is the result of volcanic lava flows. The common colouring is grey to black. Bluestone has been used extensively in Victoria, especially in the city of Melbourne, since the early 1800's. The Melbourne City Council (MCC) has used Bluestone extensively throughout Melbourne's many lanes and alleyways. Marble Art has available an incredible range of bluestone in various thickness and many finishes. Many types of Bluestone and Basalt are available. From tiles to treads. We have several finishes available in Bluestone (Basalt).

  • Sawn and Milled Bluestone is a non slip finish often used externally for paving. If the surface is sawn *and* milled, it removes the large saw blade marks from the surface finish, this is a more attractive finish.
  • Honed Bluestone is a semi-polished finish for interior use and for the cladding of walls.
  • Sandblasted Etched Bluestone is a non-slip finish for external use with the added character from sand-blasting.
  • Polished Finish Bluestone is a high gloss finish suitable for interior use and for the cladding of walls.
  • Dreamtime Flamed Bluestone is an exotic non-slip finish used for external paving or cladding walls, the texture is mottled from the application of flame.
  • Bush Hammered Bluestone is an exotic non-slip finish used for external paving or cladding walls, the texture is rough from the application of a pointed-hammer tool.
  • Chopped Finish Bluestone is an exotic non-slip finish used for external paving or cladding walls, the texture is striated with lines from a hammer tool.
  • Chiseled Basaltino Finish Bluestone is in limited stock only and is a non-slip finish for external use.
  • Basaltino Sawn Bluestone is in limited stock only and is a non-slip finish for external use.

Our Bluestone Type Two is characterised by a classic bluestone colour, with a regular random pattern of occlusions or holes. Have a look at the photos and you can see the patterns of holes which is typical of this traditional bluestone. Our material is selected so that is has holes, but not too many holes!

Our Bluestone Type Four is characterised by a classic bluestone colour, with small, consistent occlusions or holes. There is no mistaking the material as natural stone, yet the material is consistent enough to avoid the large random patterns of "cats paws" that are indicative of some other bluestone types. This makes this material a natural choice for commercial projects were consitancy of finish is important, while still delivering the "natural" stone look.
