Famous Benchtops

Stone is the material of choice for premium kitchens the world over. Here are some examples of famous stone kitchen benchtops.

Maggie Beer - Baltic Brown Granite

Maggie Beer and Simon Bryant present their TV show, "The Cook and the Chef", from Maggie's home in the Barossa Valley, in South Australia. Maggie's benchtop is a natural polished granite, named Baltic Brown.

Baltic Brown is a beautiful brown colour, and traditionally is quarried in Finland. It is very hard and keeps a beautiful polish.

Maggie's benchtop has a 20mm square polished edge with pencil-round top edge. There is a drop-in stainless steel sink, and an electric smoothtop cook-top. Simplicity and style!

Shannon Bennett at Vue de Monde - Breccia Marble

Vue de Monde is pushing the boundaries of modern French Cuisine in Little Collins Street, Melbourne. The restaurant's kitchen benchtops are a natural marble, Breccia Paradiso or Breccia Nouveu.

Breccia marbles are generally brown or red and have dramatic white and cream veins. Most classic Breccia marbles are from Italy. The word "Breccia" means broken, and refers to the uneven veins that incorporate the stone in individual elements.

Breccia marbles are often used for flooring and cladding and is generally polished or honed or with an antique finish.

Vue de Monde's benchtop has a honed or antique finish, 40mm mitred polished edge with a 5mm bevel to the top edge.

George Calombaris at The Press Club - Breccia Marble

The Press Club opened in 2006 and has been attracting rave reviews from around the world for its modern take on Greek cuisine. The restaurant's kitchen benchtops are a natural marble, Breccia Paradiso or Breccia Nouveu. The bar is a black marble, Nero Marquina.

The kitchen benchtops are unusual, in that they have chosen a polished finish, where the normal finish for a marble kitchen benchtop would be honed or antiqued. But the polished finish appears to be holding up well. I believe marble benchtops should be considered like a fine piece of timber, use it, enjoy it, and it will age beautifully. The dark colour also help to hide any small marks or blemishes which is a smart move in a busy kitchen.

MasterChef

MasterChef is Channel 10's hit cooking show. Originally made for the UK market in 2001, it has gone on to conquer ratings around the world.

The latest MasterChef kitchen has large stainless steel industrial benchtops, which are already significantly and clearly scratched and marked. That is one of the common and normal aspects of stainless steel counters, they scratch easily, but are easy to clean.

The Chefs use natural Cararra marble pastry making boards for kneading dough and pastry. The Cararra has a honed finish.

The presentation podium is made with an engineered stone, SmartStone RegalBlack, which is a man-made stone that we stock. It is a high-polish finish and is black with glitters of shiny mirrors. A natural alternative would be the granite Black Galaxy.
