Sinks and Basins, under-mounted versus drop-in

Drop-in Basins

The most common kitchen basin is a "self-rimming drop-in double basin sink". These basins generally provide two rectangular sinks and a drainage board, they are self-rimming and provide a rolled and finished edge (or rim). They fit from the top of your benchtop. If the sink needs replacing, it can be achieved relatively easily.

A rectangular sink allows your baking pans to be soaked and cleaned, and a drainage board stops water running across your bench tops. The sink is also one-piece and completely waterproof, ensuring water does not seep under the edges and cause mold.

Under-mount Basins

Under-counter mount sinks are also very popular with stone benchtops, but be careful they are big enough for all your pans, and if they don't provide a drainage board, water and soap may run over your bench top. Ask Marble Art about ideas to solve this type of problem.

Under-mounted sinks require a shaped and polished cutout in the benchtop, this edge can be damaged by heavy use of metal pots and pans. Also remember that under-mounted sinks can not generally be replaced, without damaging the benchtop.

Rectangular versus Round

Round sinks (either drop in or under-mount) are very modern and look great, but often large pans and oven trays won't fit for wash-up time.

Marble Art can provide advice on types of sinks and basins and how they work with different types of stone counter tops.
